This is the complaint I wrote about Milliken Animal Clinic's culture, and sent to the AVMA. All of the following information is true

There are a few different things I would like to address in this complaint about Milliken animal clinic and Dr. Michealle Hobler. The first is the fact that this clinic is incredibly disorganized and the techs are barely trained. I got more training when I worked at subway than when I worked at Milliken Animal Clinic. There is absolutely no structure, just a list of things to do and conflicting information about what needs to be done first. I would get told to do something by a head tech and then yelled at by another tech (usually Jaycee or Kyrsten) for not prioritizing by doing what I was told. At one point, I was “reported” by other techs to the manager for doing tasks that the head techs had told me to do. Everyone complains about the lack of training and lack of structure in the clinic. The clinic is always overbooked, as Dr. Hobler does not reschedule patients even when a mistake has been made with the scheduling causing time slots to be triple booked (and this happened often). This leads to a bunch of mistakes and misdiagnoses, many of which are reflected in negative reviews online, many clients claiming that these careless mistakes caused the death of their pet. I was listening to complaints over voicemail all the time about misdiagnoses. There were also many issues with emergencies, since the clinic was so overbooked that no one had time to properly organize things and materials were often out of place when needed. An example of this was an emergency dog that arrived and the vet was asking for a certain type of IV. The IVs were not in their normal place because a tech had rearranged the day before and not told anyone, this dog died. Another example was a time that an emergency came in and materials were not well stocked in the crash cart because the clinic was having the newest employees stock it. I was one of these newer employees (not the one that had stocked it the week of this emergency-that was Kyrsten) and had mentioned to the head techs twice that I did not feel comfortable doing this important task without more training, and I was ignored. This dog also died. The clinic is not clean, as they would do things like reuse gauze that was touching blood. We also had an issue once with a possible parvo exposure to an unvaccinated dog, I wanted to inform the owners, but I was vetoed by the other techs/assists. This uncleanliness is likely why they had a covid issue earlier this year (they only closed 10 days not the recommended 14) Medications have been mixed up multiple times as well and broken surgical tools not well tested before they are needed. Next, I want to talk about the terrible work environment present at Milliken Animal clinic. I personally was attacked and harassed daily by two employees: Jaycee Cravey and Kyrsten Golding. I have been informed that multiple people have complained about Cravey (she was even terminated once, and brought back due to desperation) and nothing was ever done about this issue. Jaycee would do things such as lie to management (she told them that I was body checked into a wall, which was not true.) She would also play the silent game, even when work dictated us talking to each other (she refused to talk to me once while a dog was having a seizure on the table we were working on, which I needed her attention for.) Jaycee would also do things such as rip things out of my hands, step on my foot on purpose, throw bags of trash at my feet, and get close to me while she was sick (in 2020). She would tell me to throw things out that I was not supposed to and then smile when I got reprimanded by someone else. Jaycee would also throw things in my face while attending to things like emergencies. Another coworker (Olivia) even went as far as to ask to be taken off surgery because of Jaycee’s horrible harassment. She was harassing this person BAD WHILE WORKING ON AN ANESTHETIZED PATIENT. Jaycee would also bump into me on purpose and then blame me for not looking where I was going. She would also get mad at me for asking too many questions. Then, Kyrsten started and they ganged up on me constantly, it was horrible to go to work each day. They would purposely verbally attack me in front of other employees. Kyrsten would make mistakes (like putting away wet towels from the wash that I saw her put away) and blame them on me. I once got smacked in the face with a dog’s paw because Kyrsten was not properly restraining. Then, she was on her phone WHILE restraining the dog and AFTER I got smacked HARD. When I asked her to pay better attention, she responded with anger. Kyrsten would also be mocking me or making faces at me when she was supposed to be focused on animals that were badly hurt. Kyrsten would refuse to do work, like going to lunch without finishing voicemails and expect me to pick up the slack, verbally attacking me and critisizing me to the manager and head techs if I did not do everything she wanted. Kyrsten would drop things on the floor just so I would have to pick them up. Since Jaycee (who was a senior tech) backed her up, I had no choice but to constantly clean up after her. One time in particular Kyrsten was the vet assist on the west side, and did not do surgery packs all day, leaving a mountain of packs that needed to be done before we left. I even overheard her saying to Jaycee “I dont want to do the packs, let someone else do it.” I got irritated and told her we dont normally leave until they are done. She avoided me the rest of the night and went home early while me as well as 2 or 3 members of the surgery team did her work (she even glanced at us doing it before leaving). After being upset that I told the head techs about the packs, her abuse got worse. At one point she had a fit at me in the garage. Kyrsten was yelling and waving her fingers in my face to the point I had to take a step back in order to avoid getting smacked in the face with her hands. She was shoving things so hard in the fridge she almost broke it, and spitting on me while talking (again in 2020.) She was demanding that I talk to her about how she perceived my job performance, I tried to refuse, but she kept demanding and thretening me. She also stated that she “does not respect me”, and that I needed to work at “gaining her respect back.” So, apparently MAC is okay with having their employees completely disrespected while working. She also threatened to “talk to the boss” multiple times about things like “not prioritizing well” in a way that was unfair and exaggerated. Kyrsten was angry about things like me cleaning off check in sheets during work hours, claiming that we needed to wait to do those until the end of the day. However, Hobler had told me to do them during the day. All Dr. Hobler had to do was let the rest of the staff know that I was told to do these sheets and I would have been spared a lot of harassment and abuse, but she didnt and just left it up to me. Little things like this are part of why the clinic is just run poorly. I wanted to stand up for myself while Kyrsten was having this fit, but was afraid that if I did she would either try to fist fight me or get me fired. This experience was extremely frightening. So in summary, even though I was covering for Kyrsten constantly, she talked to management making it seem like I was the one slacking. I informed management about the abuse multiple times, Once even having a meeting with Jaycee in which she denied everything and lied about me (this is where she claimed I was body checked into a wall.) and management just blindly listened. During this meeting, Chandra the office manager was distracted and didnt even really listen to my claims about the abuse. At no point during this meeting did Chandra or Dr. Hobler (who were both present) say anything to the effect of it being unacceptable for an employee to bully and harass their coworkers. I guess that means they think IS acceptable. Much of this meeting was spent telling me to ask fewer questions which honestly is probably not the best strategy for patient safety. I was not given opportunity to talk to management about things like “not prioritizing well” without Jaycee being present. The head tech confirmed that complaints have been made about Jaycee and Kyrsten multiple times but nothing is ever done. This constant infighting caused plenty of problems since the staff was often distracted. There were multiple instances of dogs almost getting hurt or jumping off of tables because these employees were focused on yelling at others. I am also not the only one who went through this. In my time at Milliken AC, multiple employees quit or talked about quitting due to the hostile environment. Only about ¼ of their techs have been present for over a year (as listed on their site), their turnover rate is insane. It is extremely difficult to focus on work when you are being harassed constantly. Next, the practices that are done. They do dentals in bulk, which means that patients are anesthetized for hours longer than they need to be for their dental. This is something that has been complained about on google (the reviewer mentioning that their pet died.) Dr Hobler (illegally) requires monthly unpaid meetings. She also requires (paid) meetings during lunch monthly, so you miss out on lunch once a month. During one of these meetings she reprimanded the surgery team for the way they were handling animals (such as picking an adult cat up by the scruff.) Here, Hobler stated that she wanted to put cameras in so that clients could see their pets being operated on, but was afraid to because of the way her employees handled the pets. Dr. Mcgreer said that she found the way animals were handled at this clinic “heartbreaking”. The Office manager (Chandra) has informed me that dogs have gotten loose multiple times, and she didnt care as long as someone was with the dog to avoid lawsuits. It is a running joke at the clinic that Chandra is a terrible manager and sits in her office all day. She does not pay attention to what is going on at the clinic and just follows employee gossip, which is a huge fear tactic that is used by the abusive coworkers. Dr. Hobler has also said things like “You techs need to keep quiet about moral issues you notice in this clinic” (I am paraphrasing but that IS what she said). She has also told employees in a meeting that she was sick of listening to them complain of being tired. (Staying late, sometimes past midnight, and working the next day at 7am.) I have seen the Dr.s here exchange weed while at work (as far as I know they were NOT smoking at work but it still seems unprofessional.) This is not a gay or trans friendly environment. The 3 senior techs (Jaycee, Tiffany, Jessi) would purposely loudly spew anti-glbt rhetoric so members of staff that were glbt supportive heard it and became uncomfortable. They purposely did this around glbt emplyees to make them uncomfortable. The above statements make me uncomfortable with Dr. Hobler and the way her clinic is run.
